Here are some trickier sounds-

A quick guide to phonics for parents- see booklet

What is phonics?

The alphabet contains only 26 letters. Spoken English uses about 44 sounds (phonemes).

Once children begin learning sounds, they are used quickly to read and spell words.

The phonics code breaker

Phoneme - a sound as it is said

Grapheme - a sound that is written

Digraph- two letters that work together to make the same sound

Trigraph - Three letters that work together to make the same sound

Split digraph - Two letters that work together to make the same sound, separated by another letter

Phonics Sounds Mats

The Phase 2 sounds will initially be learnt in Foundation 2.

The Phase 3 sounds will initially be learnt in Foundation 2.

The Phase 5 sounds will be learnt in Foundation 2 and Year 1.

On YouTube there is a channel called 'Letters and Sounds for Home and School'. These have daily lessons for reception and Year 1. The Year 1 sessions are a really good recap of alternative phonemes to help with spelling and reading words.
